Terms of Use
1. Acceptance
1.1. HanUp ("the app") is an app for Vietnamese learners of Chinese following the HSK syllabus, published by HanUp ("we", "us").
1.2. By creating an account, signing in or using the app, you agree to these Terms of Use and to the Privacy Policy (https://hanup.vn/privacy). The app records the version you accepted and when. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
1.3. You must be aged 16 or over. People under 16 may not create an account or use the app.
2. Account
2.1. You need an account to use the app. You sign up with an email and password (verified with a 6-digit code sent by email), or sign in with Google or Apple.
2.2. You agree to use your own email, provide accurate information, keep your password secret and take responsibility for activity in your account. If you suspect unauthorised use, change your password and let us know.
2.3. Each account is for one person. Do not share, sell or transfer accounts. Do not use disposable email addresses or automated tools to create accounts.
2.4. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Profile › Settings › Delete account). Deletion is permanent and removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy.
3. The service
3.1. The app provides: an HSK learning path and lessons, a vocabulary bank, topic-based learning, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing practice, flashcards with a review schedule, character-writing practice, study reminders, statistics, points and badges, an optional leaderboard, progress sync across devices, and AI scenario practice.
3.2. Most learning content is built into the app and works offline. An internet connection is needed for: sign-in, sync, the leaderboard, AI Practice and downloading the Kokoro voice pack (about 91 MB, downloaded once).
3.3. We may change, add or discontinue some features and set reasonable usage limits (for example the number of AI Practice messages per day). The app may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance or incidents. We do not guarantee that the service is always available.
3.4. The app does not score pronunciation and is not an official HSK exam. Results, points, ranks and badges in the app are not proof of proficiency.
4. Acceptable use
4.1. You must not:
- use the app for unlawful purposes, fraud, harassment or infringing the rights of others;
- set a display name, bio or profile photo, or create flashcards, with content that is unlawful, pornographic, violent, hateful, impersonates others or infringes intellectual property;
- interfere with the servers, probe for vulnerabilities, circumvent usage limits or bot protection, access other people's data, or use automated tools to call the service;
- cheat on points or rankings (for example by altering data or using several accounts);
- reverse-engineer, copy or redistribute the app, except as permitted by law or by open-source licences.
4.2. AI Practice
- Replies and feedback are generated automatically by an AI model (Alibaba Cloud's Qwen) and may be wrong about characters, pinyin, meaning, grammar, culture or facts. Check them when needed. They are not professional advice (legal, medical, financial…).
- Use AI Practice only to practise Chinese. Do not use it to create unlawful or harmful content, and do not try to make the AI abandon the scenario's role.
- Do not enter sensitive personal information about yourself or others in the conversation.
- The text you send is processed as described in section 5 of the Privacy Policy. We do not store conversations.
- Current limits: 4 of your messages per conversation (8 turns including the AI) and 50 messages per person per day. Limits may change.
4.3. If you breach this section, we may remove the offending content, limit features, or suspend or terminate your account (section 10).
5. Your content
5.1. Content you create — display name, bio, profile photo, your own flashcards, messages you send in AI Practice — remains yours.
5.2. You allow us to store, back up, sync and process this content as needed to provide the service to you, on a non-exclusive, royalty-free basis, for as long as you keep your account — including showing your display name, profile photo and HSK level to other learners if you join the leaderboard.
5.3. You confirm that you have the rights to the content you upload, including your profile photo.
6. Learning content and data licences
6.1. Learning content is partly based on the open sources below, used under each source's licence.

6.2. Content taken from CVDICT (and adaptations of it) remains under CC BY-SA 4.0; you may reuse that content under that licence. These Terms do not limit the rights that open-source licences give you.
6.3. The HSK learning path, lessons, topics, sample decks and AI Practice scenarios we wrote, and the illustrations and videos in the app, belong to us or are used under licence from their owners.
6.4. Content may contain errors. We try to fix them when found but do not guarantee that content is always complete and accurate. You can report content errors to [email protected].
7. Intellectual property
7.1. The app, its interface, the name "HanUp", its icon and the content in section 6.3 belong to HanUp or to our licensors.
7.2. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to install and use the app on your devices for learning, within these Terms and the terms of the App Store or Google Play.
7.3. Open-source libraries in the app belong to their authors and are under their own licences (see the "Open-source licenses" screen in the Profile area of the app).
8. Fees
8.1. The app is currently free and stores no payment information. Some AI Practice scenarios are labelled as an advanced plan and are currently locked for all users.
8.2. If paid plans are introduced later, we will clearly state what they include, their price and how to cancel before you buy, and update these Terms. Payment will then be made through the App Store or Google Play.
9. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
9.1. The app is provided free of charge, "as is" and "as available". To the extent permitted by law, we do not guarantee that the app is error-free or uninterrupted, that learning content or AI replies are always accurate, or that you will achieve any learning or exam result.
9.2. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damage arising from using or being unable to use the app, including data loss due to device failure, loss of connection or deleting your account.
9.3. Third-party services (Supabase, Resend, Cloudflare, Alibaba Cloud, GitHub, Apple, Google, the App Store, Google Play) are subject to their own terms.
9.4. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits consumer rights that Vietnamese law requires to be protected.
10. Suspension and termination
10.1. You can stop using the app and delete your account at any time.
10.2. We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these Terms or the law, or harm others or the service. Except in urgent cases or where the law forbids it, we will tell you by email to your account's address, with the reason.
10.3. If we stop providing the app, we will give at least 30 days' notice in the app or at https://hanup.vn and handle your data under the Privacy Policy.
10.4. When your account ends, your right to use the app under section 7.2 also ends. Sections 5.3, 6, 7, 9 and 11 survive.
11. Governing law and disputes
11.1. These Terms are governed by the laws of Vietnam.
11.2. Disputes should first be resolved by negotiation: please contact [email protected] first. If negotiation fails, disputes will be settled by a competent court in Vietnam.
12. Changes to these Terms
When we change these Terms, we update the effective date and version at the top, publish the new version at https://hanup.vn/terms and notify you in the app. For significant changes, the app may ask you to accept again. If you keep using the app after the new version takes effect, you are deemed to accept it; if you do not agree, you can delete your account.
